Thomas was born about 1836 in Sunbury Co., NB, to Daniel & Phoebe Smith. He married 19 Oct 1865, in Greenwich, Kings Co., NB, to Mary Nutter, (born 22 Feb 1840, died in 1914). A report of a Sunday School Concert, in the Religious Intelligencer (Saint John, NB) of 26 Dec, 1862, said: “The speeches too were short but very much to the purpose, being delivered as they were, first by Mr. Thomas E. Smith (son of the late Deacon Daniel Smith of this place), to whom alone we feel ourselves in debted for getting up the whole performance.” In the same newspaper, dated 2 Oct, 1863, a report of a picnic on the Oromocto said: “This Sabbath school, by the way, is in a very flourishing condition. Through the untiring labors of its superintendent, Mr. Thomas E. Smith.” A grave stone in St. Luke’s Anglican Cemetery, Hoyt, Parish of Blissville, Sunbury Co., NB, is inscribed: “Thomas Endicott Smith, 1836-1897; Mary, his wife, 1838-1914; Mary Pickard Smith, 1872-1918.” Children of Thomas E. & Mary (Nutter) Smith: Herbert H. 1867, Annie P. 1869, Mary 1872-1918
