Solomon Van Gorder Tice was born March 18, 1810 (or 1818) in Stevens Landing, Elmira, Chemung Co., New York, and died February 07, 1887 in Barryton, Fork Twp., Mecosta Co., Michigan.. Solomon Van Gorder Tice was one of the earliest settlers in the Barryton area. He and his wife, Elizabeth Hartt, and their children came to Barryton from Canada by way of Yale, Michigan. In 1861, they took up a homestead just east of Eaton Cemetery on the Chippewa Lake Road. Solomon was the first Post Master in the area. He rode on horseback to Big Rapids to pick up the mail, which the other settlers would get from his house. The nearest towns were Big Rapids, Sherman City, and Evart.
