James Gordon Porteous was born 1877 in Nova Scotia. He married Lalia Hartt Dec.7, 1910, in Mossleigh, AB. (north east of Calgary) daughter of Henry and Addie (Way) Hartt. "James always liked farming, being raised on a farm in Nova Scotia and although a contractor for many years was farm minded, so when the opportunity to buy came up, we decided to take it. There were no gravel roads and you were in the ditch or having to be pulled through some slough that had dried up but rain made it impassible; we have even had chains on all 4 wheels. In the spring of 1916 we sowed our first crop. We had the land plowed and prepared the year we bought; we also drilled a well, built a small house and a barn. There children were: Wilda Alberta 1912-1985, Rayona Elizabeth 1914-1987, Gordon Hartt 1915-2004. Lalia died in 1974. Both are buried in Union Cemetery, Calgary, Alberta.
