Samuel E. Samuel was born on May 9, 1828, in Kingston, York, NB, to Rev. Samuel Jr. & Mary (Estey) Hartt. Around 1851, he is thought to have married Hannah Nevers (Nov. 1821-Feb. 1857). This is a bit of a mystery as some don't think Hannah married THIS Samuel E. Hartt. We know for sure Samuel married Mary Ann Hayes on June 14, 1859, at Jacksontown, Carleton, NB, in a ceremony officiated by his father. Mary Ann was born in Norton, Kings Co., the daughter of William B. & Mary (Burlock) Hayes. Mary Ann died while visiting her daughter Adelia (Hartt) Gordon who lived in Leeds, ME, on her husbandís family farm. We donít know if she was buried in Leeds, ME, or back in NB. Physician C. W. Randlette, M.D. of Monmouth, ME, reported her cause of death as endocarditis.and died August 1906 at Leeds, Maine. We believe that Samuel was a farmer. Samuel knew his Bible, even though he had not had much education. He could pronounce the difficult words in the Old Testament with ease. He read the Bible a lot to his children. He was a good reader, giving expression to the stories so that they came alive to his hearers. A person could almost see the prophet Elijah picking up his skirts while running before the kingís chariot, and hear the rain falling. He called his daughter Lillian his little petty darling growing up in the world to see trouble. Samuel E. died March 18. 1897 and is thought to have been buried in the Lower Waterville United Baptist Cemetery, but his grave was not found, Have done some searching but can't find his burial place. óContributed by the Mellen family Children of SAMUEL HARTT and MARY HAYES are: ADELIA C.7 HARTT, b.
