Julian Norris Hartt was born in Selby, South Dakota on June 13, 1911 to Rev. Albert & (Laura Beals) Hartt. He married Neva B. Leonard in Sioux Falls, SD, on June 16, 1935. She was born Sep. 1, 1910, and died Dec 19, 1985, in Berea, KY. Julian married Elinor Roberts on Sep. 1, 1987. Julian entered Dakota Wesleyan University in the late 1920ís. He later attended the Garret Biblical Institute and received his M.A. at Northwestern University. In 1948, he obtained his Ph D. at Yale University in philosophy and theology. He taught at Yale for 29 years. He then went to the University of Virginia, where he taught until his retirement in 1981. He was elected professor emeritus before his retirement. He was also an ordained Methodist minister. Julian said the relationships he has formed with many of his students are especially important to him. "If my office is open, students come in to chat." He explained "I attach a great deal of weight to friendships." His fondest memories involve experiences with his students. He passed away at 100 yrs of age November 29, 2011. He was cremated and his ashes scattered on Cape Cod Bay. Children of Julian & Neva (Leonard) Hartt: Beverly Ann, Susan Laura, Julian Norris Jr.
