William Edward Perley was born in Maugerville, Sunbury County, NB, of colonial Welsh-Puritan, pre- Loyalist ancestry. He was educated at the Maugerville Public Schools. He married Sarah Hartt on April 13, 1837. Taken from the vital statistics: “William E. Perley of Sunbury County, is the father of the local Legislature. He was born in Maugerville March 25, 1815 and when quite young moved to Blissville where he spent 58 years as a farmer and lumber operator. Honorable W.E. Perley was a member of the Executive Council from 1862-1865 and again from 1874-1878. He sat in the House Assembly from 1854-1870 when he was defeated but was re-elected at General elections of 1874-1878 and 1890. He is Conservative in politics but ran his last election as an independent and was in opposition to the Government. He was an unsuccessful candidate for the House of Commons at the General election of 1867.
