Paul Matthew Hartt was born on April 12, 1895 to Sanford Yale and Alice Wilmot Hartt. During the first World War, he joined the United States Marine Corps and was assigned to the 18th Battalion 5th Marine Corps. Private Paul Matthew Hartt was killed in action during the first World War on July 18, 1918, near Chateau-Thierry, France. Jane Cassaras recently found some old letters showing that his grave was moved several times until he was finally laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia on May 19, 1921.
