John Hart was born on May 27, 1780, in Groton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. He was the fourth of seven sons born to Daniel and Bethiah (McIntire) Hart. John went to Orwell, Rutland County, Vermont, either with Paul and Deborah (White) Spooner, or shortly afterward, as a farm laborer. Deborah (White) Spooner was the sister of his future wife, Prudence White. John married Prudence White in Brandon, Rutland County, Vermont, before 1805. Their first son was born in Georgia, Franklin County, Vermont and they eventually had a farm in Castleton, Vermont where they raised four known sons. In his later years, they moved into Brandon and had a home on Park Street. The farm in Castleton was sold by the three surviving sons after they moved to Ohio. Children of John and Prudence: Homer W., 1805-1877; Danna, 1806-1820; John M., 1809-1877; and Hiram Carter Hart, 1810-1858.
