Caroline Henrietta Hartt was the daughter of Rev. Henry and Phobe Hartt. She was born July 24, 1873 on the Hartt Homestead near Jacksontown, Carleton County, New Brunswick. She came west from New Brunswick to teach school in 1903 - two years before Alberta became a province. Caroline married Richard Syson in 1907 in Calgary, Alberta. She was the first teacher at Pilot Knob School in 1907, wwhich was a mile & half from the Syson homestead. They were good community people and saw the need to start a Sunday School in the nearby school building. She was a hard worker on the farm and in the classroom. She fed and watered the cattle during the winter so Richard could earn a few dollars coal mining 30 miles away. Caroline died of cancer in 1945 at 72 years of age. She raised a step-son, Thurston, 1902-1972; and a daughter, Florence, 1913-2007.
