Richard Mackley Syson
1873 - 1958
Husband of Caroline Hartt

Richard didn't want to coal mine like his father, in 1895 he and a friend sailed for Johannesburg, South Africa to work for 3 yrs. When he returned to England he married Florence Hall of Gedling, Notts on January 11, 1902. Richard immigrated from Cossal Notts, UK in 1903 to Alberta to homestead with his wife, Florence (Hall) and 2 month old son, Thurston. Sadly, his wife died in 1905 during childbirth, east of Ponoka, AB. Good friends took care of little Thurston so Richard could work on the homestead. In 1907, he married Caroline Hartt who was a school teacher originally from New Brunswick. Together they had 2 children, Gerald died at 9 months and Florence Pearl lived to be 93 yrs of age. Thurston died at 71 yrs of age. Richard sang in 2 choirs in Stettler. He often had to walk the 6 miles into town for choir practice. After Caroline died of cancer in 1945, he started to oil paint giving away many paintings to people he cared for. Most of all Richard and Caroline loved to serve the Lord and were charter members of the Stettler Baptist church.
